GFWC OF TennesSEE Leadership The objective of the Leadership Program in Tennessee for
2004-2006 is to develop and activate “leadership” in clubs, districts and the
State. To achieve this, the Leadership Program in the GFWC Handbook and the
material developed by the GFWC Leadership Committee: Leadership Tool Kit
will be used. Each club and each leader should have a copy of this literature.

Opportunities available:
Leadership Roundtables –
Discussions for members will be avail-able at our Fall Board and District
Meetings. Members will be encouraged to “speak out” about their ideas. Points to
be covered will include:
- Identifying potential leaders
- Strengthening leadership skills
- Encouraging members to seek leadership roles
- Celebrating “success stories”
LEADS – Leadership
Education And Development Seminars.
Potential leaders are encouraged to apply for the LEADS seminar held at GFWC
Conventions where aspiring ladies are given the opportunity to develop new
skills and self-confidence in their ability to undertake leadership roles GFWC
underwrites the plane fare and meals and Tennessee will contribute $300 toward
the candidate’s expenses. Only one candidate for each state may attend and may
attend only once. Application form and judging criteria are available from the
reporting section of the GFWC of TN Handbook. Applications are due to the State
President by February 1 of each year.
Tennessee Leadership Seminar
(TLS) is aimed for high school sophomores and juniors. This is a three
day leadership seminar. Each public and private school in the state is allowed
to send one outstanding student who has shown a potential for leadership to
participate in the activities. The purpose is to seek out, recognize and reward
leadership potential by providing opportunities for interaction with recognized
leaders in education, business, government and many other professions.
Sponsorship cost is $175 per student. Clubs or individuals can be a part of this
program by sponsoring one or more students. All funding and manpower is provided
by volunteers.
TIME LINE
- October – contact local schools to be sure they have
received the TLS packet and have nominated a student and an alternate.
- November – Check to see that the nomination has been
sent to TLS
- February – Arrange for local publicity.
- March – Make sure the club sponsorship ($175.00) has
been sent to Joan Beaver.
- May – Make sure student has received his/her
registration and has transportation to the seminar. If there is a
transportation problem, contact the Chairman.
One Day Seminars – Clubs
are encouraged to hold a one day local seminar (PATH – Practical And Teachable
Habits) for freshmen or sophomores based upon the same format and for the same
purposes / goals. Seminars may be open to students from one school or to
students from several schools. Recommended number is 25-50. The program should
include developing critical thinking skills and using self-development
activities. Assistance in setting up a PATH is available by contacting Joan
Beaver.
Basic steps in setting up a seminar
are:
- Organize a committee
- Decide on date and location
- Plan program and invite speakers
- Contact schools and get a list of potential leaders
- Write the students and include RSVP by a selected date
- Plan and secure food for the day
- Have fun when you conduct the seminar!
